Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT) is a fusion of individual psychodynamic therapy and cognitive behaviour therapy. CAT actively involves the psychological collaboration between the psychologist and client throughout therapy and there is a strong emphasis on the therapeutic relationship between client and therapist throughout therapy.  CAT is most effective within face to face psychological therapy sessions although it is possible to apply some psychological concepts from CAT within psychological consultations or during phone based CAT psychology sessions should clients wish this.

What is cognitive analytic therapy (CAT)?
Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT) is an NHS recommended psychological therapy involving the most effective aspects of cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) and individual psychodynamic therapy.

What does cognitive analytic therapy (CAT) do?
Cognitive analytic therapy (CAT) involves the Clinical Psychologist taking the adolescent or adult on a psychological journey to discover how their psychological problem(s) originated and are currently being reinforced.   CAT does not view psychological problems as existing in individual clients but has a social psychological model of psychological difficulties established in the interpersonal relationships between people.

What sort of conditions can it be used on?
Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT) is particularly helpful in treating long term psychological problems which have existed for several months or years such as anxiety, depression and interpersonal relationship problems.  Such long term psychological problems can sometimes occur as a consequence of past experiences of abuse and other psychological trauma and CAT is particularly helpful in allowing people to move forward in their lives after such difficulties.
